It’s just a week until Halloween! Are you looking for some last minute books to help build speech and language skills in young children? You’ve come to the right place! I’ve selected 12 great books that all fit the criteria I talk about in my post How to Choose Great Children’s Books to Support Speech & Language Development. (If you haven’t checked out that post, I encourage you to do so!). I’ve separated the books by *approximate* ages. Some children will enjoy the “toddler†books for years (which is why I titled it “Toddlers and UPâ€) while some 2 year olds may be ready for some of the 3 and up books. For example, my older kids love most of these books despite being 3.75 and almost 6.
As usual, there are Amazon affiliate links for your convince. Remember: with Amazon Prime you can get most of these books delivered to your door in 2 days! (I heart Amazon Prime!)
Toddlers and Up
One, Two…Boo! by Kristen L. Depken (ages 1 and up): A fun lift-the-flap board book. Kids count their way thorough the spooky old house. Super fun!
Who’s There on Halloween? by Susan hagen Nipp (ages 1 and up): Follow the clues to name the holiday creates hiding inside!
Mouse’s First Halloween by Lauren Thompson (ages 1 and up): It’s mouse’s first Halloween! Join him as he hears all sorts of new sounds on this fun holiday.
Ages 3 and Up
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams (ages 3 and up): This is one of my most favorite books of all time. The little old lady heads out on a walk and runs into some interesting things along the way…but she is not afraid if anything so she keeps on going. Find out who knocks at her door at the end of the book!
What’s in the Witch’s Kitchen? by Nick Sharratt (ages 3-7): This is another NEW favorite around here. This is an awesome lift-the-flap book takes you on a tour of the witch’s kitchen where your child will find all kinds of ghastly things! So.much.fun.
The Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills (ages 3 and up): This is a Halloween themed version of the classic kids song. Just a fin and entertaining read!
The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing (ages 3-8): I LOVE the “Night Before…” series of books and so do the kids! Twas the night before Halloween and monsters and goblins are getting ready for the trick or treaters! What will happen?
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat! by Lucille Colandro (ages 3-8): I have been using this in my speech and language therapy from day one. The old lady is at it again, swallowing up all kinds of silly Halloween gear. What will happen when she eats TOO MUCH?
We’re Off to Find the Witch’s House by Mr. Krieb (ages 3 and up): This is a new one for us this year and my kids LOVE it. Kind of a spin off of “We’re going on a bear hunt” the kids are off to find the witches house in this fun tale.
Ages 4 and Up
Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell (ages 4-8): 10 timid ghosts living in a haunted house…until a witch moves in and wants them out! One by one the poor ghosts get scared off. I personally think this book is fine for 3 year olds, but I think the 4 year recommendation is likely because of the “scary” content. My 3.5 year old likes it!
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson (ages 4-8): Another favorite here. Though this is not specifically a Halloween book, I listed it here since it is all about a witch. In this book, the witch goes for a ride on her broom and picks up some friends along the way..but then they have some trouble and are in danger! I love this book!
Where’s My Mummy? by Carolyn Crimi (ages 4-8): Little baby mummy does NOT want to go to sleep. He want’s to play some hide and shriek with his mama mummy but then he is off to find his mama mummy in the deep, dark night. Follow him along on this deep, dark adventure.
I hope you find a few new books here to enjoy this last week before Halloween!
