It is OCTOBER, one of my favorite months. Both in my therapy sessions and at home, we love doing fall and Halloween themed activities and reading fun themed books as well.
A couple years ago, I discovered the book Room on the Broom

What is Room on the Broom About?
The witch and her cat are taking a fly on her broom…but the wind keeps blowing the witches belongings off her stick and to the ground. “Down!” cried the witch, Â as she goes down to retrieve her missing items. On the ground several different animals help find her missing items, and then they too ask for a ride on her broom. But is their room on the broom? Soon the witch and her friends come face to face with a hungry dragon who “is as mean as can be and witch with french fries sounds delicious” to him. What will become of the witch and her broom? You need to read to find out!
What do I Love about Room on the Broom?
I love the rhyming in this book. The rhyming patterns can help build phonological awareness skills that help young children be stronger readers and spellers. I also love the large, colorful illustrations by Axel Scheffler. In addition, this book provides many opportunities for learning new vocabulary. Words such as ginger, clambered, reeds, moors, yowl, bog & cauldron are some that come to mind.
The best part, is that my kids and clients LOVE this book. We love to read the line “DOWN cried the witch!” together and in silly voices and because of the rhyme, my kids are better able to “predict” the words and “read along” with me.

My favorite part of the book is the rhyming aspect. I am a reading teacher and it builds confidence, in addition to phoneme awareness, in the children who can participate with the reading. Love it!

My favorite part of the book is the end, when everyone has their own special seat on the broom.
We found Room on the Broom last year and it became a favorite read. Between the rhyming and the predictions we had fun every time we opened the book.

I love all the Julia Donaldson books, especially The Gruffalo! My kids had it memorized at 2 yrs because the rhyme scheme is so good!

I am unsure about my favorite part, as I don’t have the book! However, the premise looks fun and they rhyming aspect is perfect for my primary crowd!
